The caudex reaches only approximately 5 cm in diameter and is remarkably slender in relation to the overall length of the plant. Individuals invariably grow pendulously and are attached to tree branches by only a few stout roots.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe caudex bears only a few spines, which are usually simple and unbranched. The equally elongated shoot is armed in the fertile region with delicate, branched spines arranged circumferentially around the alveoli.
