The name \u003cem\u003ependens\u003c\/em\u003e refers to the plant’s characteristic pendulous growth habit.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eCharacteristic of the species is an elongated cylindrical to club-shaped, usually pendulous grey-brown to dark brown caudex with conspicuous whitish longitudinal ribs. Numerous simple, slender spines are arranged along these ribs; the entrance openings to the ant chambers are arranged in rows and surrounded by small pores. The mostly unbranched shoots bear narrow elliptical to lanceolate, leathery leaves with a wedge-shaped base and a long, tapering tip.
