Its creeping rhizomes grow tightly appressed to the substrate, creating narrow spaces between the rhizome and the tree bark that are used by various ant species as nesting sites and passageways. The ants deposit organic material in these spaces, providing the fern with an additional source of nutrients. Unlike the former \u003cem\u003eSolanopteris\u003c\/em\u003e species, however, these nesting sites are not formed by specialized domatia or swollen rhizomes.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA similar strategy is found in \u003cem\u003eLecanopteris mirabilis\u003c\/em\u003e, several species of the genera \u003cem\u003eHoya\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eDischidia\u003c\/em\u003e, and the epiphytic cacti \u003cem\u003eDeamia testudo\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eStrophocactus wittii\u003c\/em\u003e.
